Oviedo Colorguard wins 1st Place at Competition!

On Saturday, February 26th, The Oviedo High School Colorguard participated in the 2011 Colors of the Coast invitational competition at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida.  High School Colorguards from Tampa to Palm Coast competed in this Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit show. (F.F.C.C)   O.H.S. was awarded the first place trophy in division 2A, and improved their score five points over their last competition at Lyman High School on February 12th.

The Oviedo Colorguard features 18 talented O.H.S. students, well-known for their performances in the fall, as part of the O.H.S. Marching Lion Band.
During their winter season, also known as Winterguard, this outstanding team develops and performs an exciting show all their own, and participates in 6 competitions.  This year’s show is entitled “Run” and is performed to the song “The Dog Days are Over” by Florence and the Machine.

During competition, five judges contribute 20 points each, with criteria such as visual effect, movement, equipment, and general effect.
With their rapid improvement this season, the Oviedo Colorguard hopes to compete in Division 1A next year, which will provide the opportunity to compete nationally.  With three more competitions to come in 2011, anticipation is high!

The directors and designers of the program are Jason Ciesla and Sharon Stump, with movement tech Shannon Sullivan and weapon tech Alexa Sorci.  According to Stump, the show is a real crowd-pleaser, and features stand-out performances from three sabres at the beginning; Sara Barncord, Nicole deLeon, and Tinka Tucker. “They nailed their tosses,” Stump said.  According to Stump, “We could not have asked for a better day,” and she wishes to thank O.H.S. band director Dennis Line and all the parents for their amazing support.  The next regional competition on the Oviedo Colorguard schedule is March 26th, at U.C.F.

O.H.S. Band receives Otto J. Kraushaar Award again!

For the second year in a row, Oviedo High’s band has been awarded The Otto J. Kraushaar Plaque, an honor bestowed upon fewer than 1% of bands in the state of Florida, making it the most prestigious award a high school band can receive.
Following their performance at the 2010 Florida Bandmasters Association State Music Performance Assessment on April 28th in Vero Beach, the Oviedo High School Wind Ensemble received the plaque, following straight superiors in all captions. To earn the Kraushaar award, a band must receive straight superiors in all such assessments throughout the school year, including marching assessment, district concert assessment, and state concert assessment.
This is the fifth Kraushaar award the school has received in its history, three of which have been awarded since 2005. Under the direction of Mr. Dennis Line, the band performed The Entry March of the Boyars, Festive Overture, and Southern Harmony. These level VI pieces represent some of the most difficult literature on the music list. The judges critiqued the band on performance fundamentals, technical preparation and musical effect.

It has been a great season for the O.H.S. band, who also received straight superior marks at this year’s Florida Marching Band Assessment in Deland, Florida.
