Band
receives Otto J. Kraushaar Award
again!![]() For the second year in a row, Oviedo High’s band has been awarded The Otto J. Kraushaar Plaque, an honor bestowed upon fewer than 1% of bands in the state of Florida, making it the most prestigious award a high school band can receive. Following their performance at the 2010 Florida Bandmasters Association State Music Performance Assessment on April 28th in Vero Beach, the Oviedo High School Wind Ensemble received the plaque, following straight superiors in all captions. To earn the Kraushaar award, a band must receive straight superiors in all such assessments throughout the school year, including marching assessment, district concert assessment, and state concert assessment. This is the fifth Kraushaar award the school has received in its history, three of which have been awarded since 2005. Under the direction of Mr. Dennis Line, the band performed The Entry March of the Boyars, Festive Overture, and Southern Harmony. These level VI pieces represent some of the most difficult literature on the music list. The judges critiqued the band on performance fundamentals, technical preparation and musical effect. |

OHS percussion first-place at State Marching Championship! On Saturday, November 21st, 2009, The Oviedo High School Marching Lion Band competed in the 2009 Florida Marching Competition in St. Petersburg, Florida. This was the official state-championship event for marching bands, featuring the top-ranked high school bands from all over Florida competing in five divisions. Under the leadership of band director Dennis Line, the O.H.S. band reached the state finals for the first time in school history, a distinction earned by only five bands in each division. The band’s performance in the finals achieved 12th place overall out of 300 bands who participated throughout the marching season. After winning first-place honors at numerous competitions this season, the O.H.S percussion section, comprised of the drumline and front ensemble, brought home the first-place trophy for their contribution, earning best-in-state status with a score of 96. It has been a great season for the O.H.S. band, who also received straight superior marks at this year’s Florida Marching Band Assessment in Deland, Florida.

On
Saturday, October 10th, The Oviedo High School Lion Band, “The Pride of
Oviedo,” participated in the 2009 Echoes of Excellence Super Regional
Marching Competition at Middleburg High School near Jacksonville.
Seventeen high school marching bands from North and Central Florida
braved unusually hot October temperatures to put their 2009 field shows
to the test. The Marching Lions’ 2009 show is entitled “Speed of Sound” which features three separate movements, and opens with band members forming a giant sound wave that spans the field. Performances were judged by a panel of twelve highly qualified adjudicators from various educational and professional backgrounds. Trophies were awarded at the closing ceremony, and Oviedo High School’s percussion section received top honors, with a score of 91. In all major captions, the Oviedo Band received ratings of superior or distinction. Overall, the Marching Lions ranked second with a score of 85.5, only eight-tenths of a point from first place. This score also places the O.H.S. band fourth in Florida out of 145 bands, and just 1.6 points from first place in the state. |
